The Dragon Boat Festival, also known as Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese holiday with a rich history. The festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, which usually falls in May or June in the Gregorian calendar.
The origins of the Dragon Boat Festival can be traced back to ancient China and are associated with several legends. One of the most popular legends is the story of Qu Yuan, a famous poet and statesman from the Warring States period.
According to the legend, Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who spoke out against corruption and advocated for reform in his kingdom. However, his ideas were rejected by the king, and he was banished from the court. Devastated by the state of his country, Qu Yuan expressed his despair and patriotism through his poetry.
In 278 BC, when Qu Yuan heard that his kingdom had been invaded, he drowned himself in the Miluo River as an act of protest and sacrifice. The local people, who admired and respected Qu Yuan, rushed to the river to search for him. They beat drums and splashed the water with their paddles to scare away evil spirits and prevent them from harming Qu Yuan's body.
To commemorate Qu Yuan's sacrifice, the Dragon Boat Festival was established. Dragon boat races became an integral part of the festival, symbolizing the search for Qu Yuan's body in the river. Dragon boats, long and narrow boats decorated like dragons, are rowed by a team of paddlers to the beat of a drum.
In addition to dragon boat races, the Dragon Boat Festival is also known for other customs. People eat zongzi, pyramid-shaped glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves, which is said to have been thrown into the river to prevent fish from eating Qu Yuan's body. The festival also involves hanging up pouches of herbs to ward off evil spirits and wearing colorful silk threads to protect against evil.
Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated in various parts of the world, not just in China. It is recognized as an important cultural event, promoting traditional customs, teamwork, and community spirit.
